FOUNDATIONS OF MIDWIFERY CARE
Semester I

In Practice

This module introduces learners to the foundational concepts, theories, and professional frameworks of midwifery practice. It explores the historical evolution of midwifery, as well as the cultural, ethical, legal, and political factors influencing care. The module emphasizes professional identity, accountability, and woman-cantered care, guided by international standards such as those of the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM). It also examines global and national maternal and child health contexts and integrates theoretical models into practice. Learners are encouraged to critically reflect on personal values and develop competencies required for safe, respectful, and evidence-based midwifery care.
