This course aims at introducing students to multimedia elements: text, audio, picture, graphics, video, and animated flash videos. Special emphasis will be put on understanding digital properties of each of these various multimedia elements. Students will also be introduced to basic compression techniques as applied to audio and video. Underlining algorithms used to build those compression technologies will also be covered extensively in this course. MP3 and MPEG formats will be used as example to understand why compression is performed and how. Students will also learn the basics to convert from analog audios, pictures and videos to digital audios, pictures and videos. The uncompressed PCM format will be used for reference for digital audio.
